Ce texte reprend l’allocation adressée par Robert Owen en 1816 aux habitants de New Lanark à l’occasion de l’inauguration de l’Institution pour la formation du caractère. Owen y expose ses réflexions sur l’éducation, articulées à son projet social. Le texte de ce discours fut traduit en français sous le titre Institution pour améliorer le caractère moral du peuple, ou Adresse aux habitants de New-Lanark en Écosse (Paris : Louis Colas, 1819).
